Chapter Fourteen

Beneath a drizzling sky Ressa watched the setting sun. She stood on the deck looking out across the ocean in hopes that she would get a glimpse of her beloved home, the land of Markenia. A place she was no longer welcome but still held close to her heart.

Now that she knew how close they were to home all Ressa could do was daydream about the place where she grew up. She thought about Ida, Odis, and Raven and how she missed them so much.

She thought about late King Alvert and her promise to him. But most of all she thought about his stepson, Ezra, the man she left behind.

She tried hard not to think about her golden boy, but the secret she kept from him weighed heavily on her heart. She had kept hope that someday she would come face-to-face with Ezra again, but what would she tell him when she did?

Not only did she hurt the man, but she stole from his family. How was she to tell him that she was carrying around one of the biggest secrets in all of Markenia, one that less than a handful of people knew about, King Alvert’s final decree? Would Ezra forgive her once he learned she’d been keeping another secret from him? Would he understand that although I loved King Alvert and Markenia my priority is to my father?

Whenever Ressa laid down her head to sleep all she could see was Ezra’s face and guilt washed over her. She wanted to love him, to do right by him and his people, but whenever she thought of him lately all she hoped was to forget him and the pain in her heart. She had no more room in her heart for hurt and she needed to put her father first. So Ezra remained a beautiful memory she pushed deep into the corners of her mind. At least until her father was safe.

Shrugging off thoughts of Ezra, Ressa replayed her plan over and over in her head. She would get Captain Storm to let her and her father go in exchange for her help finding the Purple Necromancer. Ressa knew he would do anything to get his hands on it, and that was a fact she was willing to exploit.

Although Ressa knew she had to follow through with her plan she found it hard to be in the captain’s presence. She sensed his gaze upon her whenever he spotted her. Was he looking at me or Sephra? she thought.

It was then she thought it best to keep her distance from the captain, at least until she was ready to propose her deal to him. But Slade made it difficult for her. He noticed she had been shying away from him and so whenever it was time for supper, he would send one of his men with a handwritten invitation to Ressa to join him, but each time she refused.

At first, Storm would ignore her refusal. Night after night he’d send another handwritten request and night after night she would refuse.
